BECOMING

The Ongoing Journey of Texas Nurses

Serena Bumpus, DNP, RN, NEA-BC

CEO, Texas Nurses Association

AS NURSES, we understand that “becoming” is not a single moment or milestone. It is a lifelong process. One shaped by education, experience, challenges, and purpose. From the first day in nursing school to the final years of a seasoned career, becoming is about growth: growing in skill, in confidence, in leadership, and in impact. It is about continually asking ourselves not only what kind of nurse am I today, but what kind of nurse do I want to become.

Nursing is demanding work. It requires clinical excellence, compassion under pressure, and resilience in the face of constant change. The past several years has reminded us how much is asked of nurses and how essential it is that nurses are supported throughout their professional journey. Becoming does not happen in isolation. It requires community, advocacy, and opportunities to develop both professionally and personally.

That is where the Texas Nurses Association (TNA) plays a crucial role.

SUPPORT AT EVERY STAGE

TNA exists to support nurses at every stage of becoming. From students just finding their voice, to experienced nurses stepping into leadership, education, research, or advanced practice roles. Our role is not to define success for nurses, but to create the conditions that allow each nurse to define it for themselves.

We support becoming through professional development, offering continuing education, leadership opportunities, and resources that help nurses expand their skills and confidence. Whether a nurse wants to deepen clinical expertise, explore a new practice setting, or prepare for a leadership role, TNA helps open those doors.

We support becoming through advocacy. Nurses cannot become the professionals they aspire to be if their practice environment is unsafe, unsustainable, or undervalued. TNA prepares nurses to be advocates at the Texas Capitol and beyond for policies that protect patients and strengthen the nursing workforce. We ensure nurses have a seat at the table where healthcare decisions are made. When nurses are empowered to influence systems, they become not only caregivers but change agents.

We support becoming through community. Nursing can feel isolating, especially in high-stress environments. TNA brings nurses together across regions, roles, and specialties so they can learn from one another, share their stories, and remind each other why they chose this profession. In community, nurses find mentorship, belonging, and renewed purpose.

No matter where you are today, your becoming matters. And TNA is here to help you become the nurse and the leader you want to be.

Most importantly, TNA believes in the potential of nurses. We believe that nurses are not finished products, but professionals in progress who are constantly evolving as healthcare evolves. Becoming is not about perfection; it is about persistence, curiosity, and courage.

As CEO of the Texas Nurses Association, I am inspired every day by nurses who continue to become more: more confident, more influential, more engaged, and more aligned with their purpose. TNA is committed to walking alongside you on that journey.
