Planning Your Personal Conference Experience

From Inspiration to Impact

Attending a professional conference is more than selecting sessions, it’s about intentionally designing a learning experience that strengthens your practice, expands your perspective, and advances your professional goals.

This year’s TNA Conference, Strength in Unity: Excellence in Action, was designed using ANCC Nursing Professional Development (NCPD) principles, ensuring that every session, poster, and exhibit contribute to meaningful learning and practice change.

Design Your Conference Experience

To support meaningful engagement, sessions, posters, and exhibits are organized into four conference tracks. Rather than choosing sessions randomly, consider building a focused learning pathway aligned with your goals.

THE Track Planning Model

  • Concurrent Session - Learn
  • Poster Presentation - See Application
  • Exhibitor - Explore Resources

1. Clinical Excellence & Innovation

  • Best for: Direct care nurses, educators, quality leaders, advanced practice nurses
  • Focus: Evidence-based practice, quality improvement, patient outcomes, and innovation
  • What you’ll explore

- Clinical redesign and outcomes improvement (e.g., meal-tray workflow reducing hyperglycemia)

- Evidence-based protocols and patient safety initiatives

- AI, data, and innovation in care delivery

- Interdisciplinary models improving outcomes

  • Sample sessions from this track:

- Clinical nurse-led workflow redesign improving outcomes

- Bariatric surgery anticoagulation protocol implementation

- AI-driven evidence-based practice initiatives

  • How to plan your experience:

- Pair a clinical session + poster session + targeted exhibitor conversation to translate evidence into practice.

- Start with a clinical session to explore an evidence-based practice change or innovation

- Reinforce your learning by engaging with a poster presenter to understand real-world implementation

- Visit a relevant exhibitor to explore tools, partnerships, or resources that could support application in your setting

  • Pro Tip: Ask exhibitors, “How could this support implementation of what I just learned?”

Strengthen your practice, expand your perspective, and advance your goal.

2. Healthy Work Environments & Ethical Practice

  • Best for: All nurses, especially those navigating workplace challenges
  • Focus: Ethics, communication, workplace culture, and professional accountability

  • How to plan your experience:

- Pair a practice-focused session + reflective discussion + poster presentation + resource-based exhibitor conversation to strengthen workplace culture and ethical practice.

- Start with a session focused on communication, ethics, or work environment challenges

- Reflect on how the content applies to your setting—identify one situation where this is relevant

- Engage with a poster presenter to explore how organizations are addressing issues such as workplace violence prevention, team communication, or healthy work environment initiatives in real settings

- Connect with exhibitors that support workforce well-being, education, or organizational development to identify tools and resources that could support your team

  • Pro Tip: Ask poster presenters and exhibitors, “What helped this work in practice—and what barriers did you have to overcome?”

3. Leadership, Advocacy & Professional Influence

  • Best for: Emerging leaders, formal leaders, policy-engaged nurses
  • Focus: Leadership development, systems thinking, and advocacy
  • What you’ll explore:

- Connect with exhibitors to explore leadership pathways, advancement opportunities, or advocacy resources

  • Pro Tip: Ask, “What’s one next step I could take to grow my influence in this area?”

Transform your learning into leadership, ideas into action, and connection into collaboration.

4. Workforce Growth & Career Development

- Explore posters that highlight pipeline programs, orientation models, or professional development initiatives

- Engage directly with exhibitors to learn about programs, roles, and advancement opportunities

  • Pro Tip: Ask, “What would this path look like for someone in my current role?”

Build A Personalized Conference Pathway

Instead of attending sessions passively, consider one of these intentional approaches:

Approach A: The “Depth” Approach

Choose one track and immerse yourself fully.

  • Attend 3–5 sessions in that track
  • Visit aligned posters
  • Engage exhibitors in that area

Best for: Implementing change in your current role

Approach B: The “Breadth” Approach

Select one session from each track

  • Gain a well-rounded perspective
  • Identify connections across practice areas

Best for: Expanding your professional perspective

Approach C: The “Problem-Solving” Approach

Start with a real challenge (e.g., burnout, patient safety, communication)

  • Select sessions across tracks that address that issue
  • Build a solution toolkit

Best for: Immediate workplace impact

Approach D: The “Career Growth” Approach

Align sessions to your next professional step

  • Leadership → advocacy sessions
  • Clinical expert → innovation sessions

Best for: Long-term professional development

Conference impact

Resources for after conference

The most important question is not “What did I attend?” but “What will I do differently because of what I learned at this conference?”

Posters & Exhibits reveal resources

Learning doesn’t stop in concurrent sessions.

  • Poster presentations allow you to engage directly with nurse innovators and ask practical “how did you do this?” questions
  • Exhibitors provide hands-on exposure to tools, technologies, and resources shaping the future of nursing

Pro Tip: Identify one idea from a poster and one tool from an exhibitor that you can bring back to your organization.

Turning Learning into Action

Before you leave, identify:

  • One practice change you will implement
  • One conversation you will initiate
  • One connection you will maintain

A well-planned conference experience transforms learning into leadership, ideas into action, and connection into collaboration.

This is how we move forward, together, in unity, with excellence, and into action. TN
