Texas Nurses, Meet the International Coaching Federation

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) is the world’s leading organization dedicated to advancing the coaching profession. With more than 60,000 trained professionals across the globe, ICF upholds rigorous standards for quality, ethics, and effectiveness in coaching.

Working with an ICF-certified coach ensures that you’re partnering with someone who is trained, experienced, and committed to helping you succeed—on your terms.

Why Choose an ICF-Certified Coach?

  • Proven Training and Experience ICF-certified coaches complete accredited education programs and have extensive coaching experience. They bring evidence-based techniques to support you in areas like leadership, communication, resilience, and decision-making.
  • Ethical and Confidential Support Trust is essential. ICF coaches adhere to a strict Code of Ethics that ensures confidentiality, professionalism, and respect—creating a safe space for you to reflect, grow, and take action.
  • Lifelong Learning, Just Like You Just as nurses are committed to continuing education, so are ICF coaches. Ongoing development keeps them current with best practices so they can offer you the highest quality support.
  • Independent Credentials You Can Trust ICF credentials—Associate (ACC), Professional (PCC), and Master (MCC)—are not self-proclaimed. They’re earned through independent evaluation of skill and competency, giving you confidence in the coach’s abilities.
  • Focused on What Matters to You Whether you're dealing with team dynamics, career transitions, burnout, or strategic challenges, ICF-certified coaches are trained to help you clarify goals, build action plans, and stay accountable—resulting in measurable, real-world progress.

Creating a Professional Vision for Your Life

He encouraged me to have an “it is possible” attitude when he sensed I was lacking confidence and a sense of agency in my choices. Joseph guided me in creating both a personal and professional vision for my life to include where I will be and what my career will look like in ten years.

A Nurse's Perspective

By Amy Cohen, MSN, RN, NEA-BC

Earlier this year, as a Texas Nurses Association (TNA) committee chair, I was provided the opportunity to work with a professional coach through a pro-bono agreement between TNA and the International Coaching Federation (ICF). I had been contemplating working with a professional coach to help guide me on my professional growth and development journey, so the timing of the offer was perfect. Once I confirmed my interest in the coaching experience, I was paired with my Professional Coach, Joseph Ogbonna.

My first session with Joseph was about getting to know one another and outlining expectations, hopes, and goals for our sessions. He asked me to identify my three core values that guided me every day. These would set the tone for our sessions and how Joseph would lead our discussions. I felt an immediate connection to Joseph thanks to his warmth, kindness, and calm presence. This put me at ease, and I knew at the outset these sessions would provide valuable insight into my strengths, as well as limitations and areas of opportunity.

The agreement provided six hours of coaching over the course of six months. Joseph and I determined a biweekly cadence of sessions would best support continued progress and direction toward achieving my goals. I was able to set up our sessions easily via a calendar link, and Jospeh consistently sent me reminders in preparation for our time together.

Joseph provided a safe space to talk through struggles and problems, while challenging me to remain open to looking at situations with a different perspective and lens, often a more positive one. He encouraged me to have an “it is possible” attitude when he sensed I was lacking confidence and a sense of agency in my choices. Joseph guided me in creating both a personal and professional vision for my life to include where I will be and what my career will look like in ten years. This was an enlightening exercise that encouraged me to set stretch goals, dream big, and envision a meaningful life of possibility.

Jospeh was instrumental in guiding me through professional and life changes that weighed heavily on me and contributed to a loss of confidence in myself and my abilities. He asked me to think about how I remind myself of who I am when my confidence is shaken. What are the words that I say to myself in these situations and how might they be contributing to my feelings? He challenged me to find evidence of my successes and accomplishments to refute my beliefs about what I am capable of and to see the potential for so much more.

We continued working together to identify key areas of ongoing struggle that had the potential to keep me from moving forward. He tasked me with outlining what was not working and my thoughts on why. From there, we discussed what could be done about it or how I could contribute to a solution. Joseph also asked me to find things that were working well, and to dig deep if necessary, to uncover anything I might be missing due to limitations in my outlook on situations. The goal for our sessions was always to end with an overall hopeful and positive energy, knowing I held the power to make choices that support my journey.

Jospeh and I recently completed our coaching sessions, and I can say with confidence that the experience has changed me both professionally and personally. I have a greater sense of self and what I want for all aspects of my life. My goals, dreams, and aspirations are in alignment with my core values, and my path is clearer. I have the language to identify what is at the heart of my feelings, and I have the evidence to support my strengths, as well as the ability to pull myself out of negative spaces that do not serve me well. Thanks to Joseph, I have decided to pursue my Doctor of Nursing Practice in Executive Leadership beginning this fall. My time with Joseph was a true gift, and I hope to continue collaborating with him in the future.

I am incredibly grateful for the professional coaching sessions provided to me by TNA. It is clear they support empowering Texas nurses to advance their professional lives, their health and wellbeing, and that of the patients and communities they serve. The experience was invaluable, and I will carry the wisdom, guidance, advice, and lessons learned with me as I move forward on my nursing professional development journey.

Is Coaching Right for Me?

If you find yourself asking questions like "Is this really where I want to be?" or "How do I handle this situation with confidence?" or "What's my next step?"—coaching might be the partnership you've been seeking.

A Coach's Perspective

By Lisa Campbell, DNP, RN, PHNA-BC, FAAN, ACC

Discovering Your Inner Wisdom

Every day, nurses face complex decisions that go far beyond clinical expertise—from navigating difficult conversations with colleagues to choosing career paths that align with their deepest values. Yet many nurses struggle with these challenges alone, carrying self-limiting beliefs that hold them back from trusting themselves and reaching their full potential.

According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics, coaching is "partnering with Clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."¹ As a certified coach, I adhere to the ICF Code of Ethics¹ and the ICF Core Competencies² and want to bring this transformative process to nurses at every level of practice.

Coaching Beyond the Executive Suite

I have found that nurses who have experienced coaching are typically in executive leadership or management positions, with coaching sponsored by their organizations. However, it is my firm belief that nurses at all levels of practice can benefit from coaching. Whether you're a new graduate navigating your first year, a seasoned nurse considering a specialty change or advanced degree, or a nurse leader managing complex team dynamics, coaching provides the clarity and confidence needed to make decisions that truly serve your professional and personal growth.

I believe nurses must first understand their core values to determine if a position—or any professional decision—is truly right for them. This approach ensures that career moves align with who you are at your deepest level, not just where you think you should be.

Reframing Self-Limiting Beliefs

Here's an example of how I partner with clients to transform limiting thoughts. A nurse client once told me, "I am terrible at confrontations," which was preventing her from addressing a challenging work situation. I asked her, "What is a more empowering belief? What new belief will generate the outcome you want?"

These questions worked together to help the client reframe her self-limiting belief. Her transformation was powerful: "I am calm and centered in who I am, and I approach confrontations with grace and compassion"—grace and compassion toward herself and the other person. My goal is to help clients gain confidence, trust their inner wisdom, and view even the most challenging situations as growth opportunities.

The client later told me, "I never thought I could be someone who speaks up with confidence and kindness at the same time."

My Approach as Your Coach

You might be wondering about my intention when meeting with clients. First, I believe that clients are creative, resourceful, and whole—they have all the answers within them. My coach training was anchored in a framework centered on fulfillment, balance, and process.

My role is to elicit a client's goals and desires, hold their agenda, listen deeply, notice and bring awareness to shifts in emotions and body language, provide reflections, acknowledge insights, ask powerful open-ended questions, and invite clients to celebrate their wins.

Second, I am a witness to a client's transformation. Through our creative process and trusting relationship, clients learn to align decisions with their values, shift perspectives, and recognize they are always at choice around how they want to be or what actions they want to take. With the client's permission, I may offer ideas that have worked for others and ask what they think. I never tell a client what they should do—the wisdom comes from within.

The Transformation in Action

What I witness in my coaching relationships consistently amazes me. Nurses discover they can speak up with confidence, make career moves that energize rather than drain them, and approach challenges with curiosity and confidence rather than dread. They learn to trust their instincts, honor their values, and create professional and personal lives that truly reflect who they are.

One client, a nurse manager struggling with burnout, discovered through our work together that her core value of connection was being violated in her current role. Rather than leaving nursing entirely—which she had been considering—she transitioned to a patient education role where she could build meaningful relationships with patients and families. "I remember why I became a nurse," she told me six months later. "I just needed to find the right way to express it."

Is Coaching Right for You?

If you find yourself asking questions like "Is this really where I want to be?" or "How do I handle this situation with confidence?" or "What's my next step?"—coaching might be the partnership you've been seeking.

Consider coaching if you're experiencing any of these:

  • Feeling stuck in your current role or unsure about your next career move
  • Struggling with difficult conversations or conflict resolution
  • Questioning whether your current position aligns with your values
  • Wanting to develop stronger leadership skills
  • Feeling overwhelmed by professional or personal decisions

The nursing profession needs confident nurses at every level. Through coaching, you can discover not just what you want to do, but who you want to be as you do it.

Ready to explore how coaching could transform your nursing career? Start by reflecting on this question: "What would be possible if I trusted myself completely?" Your answer might surprise you—and it might just be the beginning of your own transformation.TN
