WHAT AN INCREDIBLE HONOR it is to begin serving as President of the Texas Nurses Association. For the next two years of my term, I have the privilege of representing more than 16,000 nurses across our great state, and I do so with deep gratitude, humility, and excitement for what lies ahead.
Before looking forward, I want to thank Dr. Amy McCarthy and our Board of Directors for their exceptional leadership. Their dedication has strengthened our association in countless ways through advocacy, strategic partnerships, increased member engagement, and organizational growth. Because of their vision and commitment, the Texas Nurses Association is well positioned for the future. I am grateful for the opportunity to build upon the momentum they created.
Like many of you, my journey with TNA began simply as a member. While I appreciated the association's work, it was only during the pandemic that I truly understood the importance of having a strong, unified voice for nursing. During one of the most challenging periods our profession has ever faced, I watched TNA advocate tirelessly for nurses and provide trusted information amid uncertainty. TNA ensured that the voices of bedside nurses and nurse leaders were heard by policymakers and the public. It reminded me that together we are strong and that no nurse has to stand alone.
Witnessing that leadership inspired me to become more involved in TNA. I wanted to contribute to an organization that was making a real difference, not only for nurses, but for the patients and communities we serve. That decision led me to run for the Board of Directors, and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career. Serving alongside passionate volunteer leaders from every corner of Texas has reinforced my belief that our association's greatest strength has always been its members.
While I appreciated the association's work (as a member), it was only during the pandemic that I truly understood the importance of having a strong, unified voice for nursing.
As President, my vision is centered on preparing the next generation of nurse leaders while continuing to elevate the voice of every nurse in Texas. I want every nurse, regardless of specialty, practice setting, or career stage, to see TNA as their professional home.
One of my highest priorities will be creating more opportunities for prelicensure students and early career nurses to engage in our work. Their perspectives are essential to the future of our profession. Whether through committee service, board representation, volunteer opportunities, or highlighting their achievements, I want emerging nurses to know that their voices matter today, not someday. Leadership is not defined by years of experience. It begins the moment someone chooses to serve.
Advocacy will remain at the center of everything we do. As we prepare for the 2027 Legislative Session, I hope we continue building on the incredible momentum we have established over the past several years. My goal is for the 2027 Nurse's Day at the Capitol to become the largest in our association's history. Every conversation with a legislator, every personal story shared, and every nurse who participates strengthens our ability to influence policies that improve healthcare for all Texans.
I also believe our future depends on strong partnerships. By continuing to collaborate with nursing schools, healthcare organizations, specialty nursing associations, and community partners, we can strengthen the nursing pipeline, support professional development, and amplify the impact of nurses throughout our state.
The future of nursing in Texas is bright because of you. Whether you are caring for patients at the bedside, leading teams, educating future nurses, conducting research, serving in the military, influencing policy, or just beginning your nursing journey, you are an important part of this association and our shared mission.
Thank you for the privilege of serving as your President. I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming months in roadshows and events, hearing your stories, and working together to ensure the Texas Nurses Association continues to be the trusted voice for nursing in our state. Together, we will grow our profession and shape the future of our organization and healthcare for generations to come. TN
