Leaning Into the Uncomfortable

HAPPY NEW YEAR TEXAS NURSES!
The start of 2025 brings with it a sense of renewal, a chance to set fresh intentions and explore new horizons. This time of year is a powerful reminder that we have the ability to shape our future through the goals we set and the actions we take.
NEW BEGINNINGS
Reflecting on this theme of new beginnings, I’ve set a personal goal for myself: to become more comfortable with being uncomfortable.
What does this look like? It means being ok when I don’t know the answer, understanding that failure is a crucial part of growth, and that growth takes time (probably the hardest truth to swallow in an age of instant gratification!). This concept of being “comfortable” is one that resonates deeply, especially in our profession. As nurses, we often advocate for change and innovation, but how often do we truly embrace the unfamiliar? How often do we step into the unknown with open arms?
The comfort zone is a tempting place—it’s safe, predictable, and easy. But staying within it can limit our growth and prevent us from reaching our full potential. It’s only when we push beyond these boundaries that we discover new strengths, new insights, and new opportunities to make a difference. The reality is that sometimes these new ways of looking things lead to incredible opportunities and experiences we wouldn’t have known existed!
This year, I challenge each of you to step out of that comfort zone and to be creative in what that looks like. Look for ways to expand your involvement and take on new challenges. Whether it’s getting involved in a project, joining a Texas Nurses Association (TNA) committee, assuming a leadership role, or attending Nurses Day at the Capitol to advocate for our profession, these opportunities are gateways to growth. Surrounding yourself with individuals who aren’t nurses and who have different experiences can also open doors to new perspectives and advancements in nursing and healthcare as a whole.
Let’s make 2025 a year of bold steps, courageous decisions, and impactful actions—for our patients and for our profession!
A STRUCTURE FOR TRANSFORMATION
New Year’s resolutions, though sometimes seen as cliché, serve a valuable purpose. They help us focus on a path forward and establish actionable steps toward achieving our goals. They provide a structure for transformation and a vision for the future.
As TNA President, my resolutions are centered around fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity. I am committed to encouraging new ways of thinking and providing safe spaces for exploration and dialogue. My focus is on collaborating with our board and staff to identify non-traditional pathways for nurse engagement, ensuring that all voices are heard and represented. Advocacy remains at the heart of my mission, as I continue to champion the interests and needs of every nurse across Texas. Moreover, I pledge to deepen my understanding of the diverse stories and experiences within our community, recognizing that each narrative enriches our collective strength.
CHALLENGE ENGENDERS GROWTH
In 2025, I encourage all of you to join me in the goal of leaning into the uncomfortable! It’s in these moments of challenge and uncertainty that we find our greatest growth. By stepping outside our comfort zones, we can transform our profession, break down barriers, and build a healthier, more dynamic Texas.
This year holds immense potential for each of us. Let’s make it a year of bold steps, courageous decisions, and impactful actions—for our patients and for our profession! Thank you for your unwavering dedication and for being such an important part of our nursing community. Here’s to a year filled with growth, discovery, and success for Texas Nurses! TN
